Abstract

Nadila. 2024. Application of Extensive Reading to Increase the Vocabulary of Class VIII Students at SMPN 8 Palopo (supervised by Rizal A.M Sjachrun and Edi Wahyono)
This research aims to determine whether or not there has been an increase in students' vocabulary skills by applying the extensive reading method using narrative texts for grade 8 students at SMPN 8 Palopo using narrative texts. The population of this study was all 152 class VIII students at SMPN 8 Palopo. This research used random sampling as a sampling technique and took 32 VIII 2 students. Researchers used reading test instruments with quantitative methods and pre-experimental designs. Data collection was carried out by conducting a pre-test, treatment and post-test. The results of this research show that the use of extensive reading can improve students' vocabulary skills by using narrative text. This can be seen from the average student scores on the pre-test and post-test. The average student score on the pre-test was 44.06 lower than the average student score on the post-test of 78.91. Apart from that, the sig (2-tailed) ˂ α (0.000 ˂ 0.05) value means there is a significant difference between learning outcomes in pre-test and post-test data. Therefore, H0 is rejected and H1 is accepted. It can be concluded that the use of the extensive reading method improves vocabulary skills by using narrative text for grade 8 students at SMPN 8 Palopo.
