This study aims to find out if the use of WhatsApp as a medium for reading learning is able to improve students' reading learning in the pandemic era. The type of
this research is descriptive quantitative with a pre experimental design type one group
pretest and post test. The data from this study was obtained using test instruments,
namely the pretest and posttest. A pretest is given to determine the students' initial
ability before being given treatment, and a posttest is given after students get
treatment to determine the students' ability to understand the material given. The test
is given in the form of multiple choice questions using Google form with reading
material in narrative text. The test was given to 31 respondents who are students from
PMDS (Pesantren Modern Datuk Sulaiman) Palopo. The data analysis technique was
carried out using the normality test, homogeneity test and the Wilcoxon test. The
results obtained are sig. 2 tailed is 0.000 < 0.05, which means that there is a
significant difference between the average pretest score and the students' average
posttest score. Because the value of 0.000 < 0.05, it can be concluded that the
hypothesis is accepted. This means that there is a difference between student learning
outcomes using WhatsApp for pretest and posttest. So it can be concluded that there
is an effect of using WhatsApp on teaching students to read in this pandemic era.
