The objective of this research is primarily to find out the student‟s perception towards online learning process using WhatsApp as a learning platform during the Covid-19 pandemic in learning English at the tenth grade Mipa 2 of SMAN 1
Batuputih. The researcher applied guided interview to collect the data from the
student‟s answers. There were 10 questions on the list of interview asked to the 10 of
samples. The researcher analyzed the data used descriptive qualitative as the design
of this research. The results of this research indicate that the teaching and learning
process in learning English online using the WhatsApp application during the Covid
19 pandemic felt ineffective. The respondents claimed it was monotonous, the teacher
not explaining the material in detail and besides that the teacher and students‟
interaction also did not go well. The teacher did not use the whatsapp as the learning
platform optimally and it makes the learning material given to the students was
limited and affected students‟ motivation to learn.
