The objective of this study is to investigate whether the implementation of
scattergories game can improve students’ vocabulary mastery at the eighth grade
students’ at SMPN 1 Masamba. The method of this study is a descriptive quantitative
method with a pre-experimental one group pre-test and post-test design method. The
data from this study is collected using test instruments, there were pre-test and post
test. The pre-test is given to determine the students’ vocabulary ability before being
given treatment and the post-test is given after treatment. The test instrument is given
before and after doing the treatment to students, the test contains multiple-choice and
pair tests. The test was given to 28 students who are from class VIII.3 at SMPN 1
Masamba. The pre-test students with an average score are 28.9286 an average post
test is 44.6429, the value of t0 (tcount) = 7.166 and df (degree of freedom) based on the
result is 27 = 2.052, namely 7.166 > 2.052, from the result, the researcher concluded
that t0 (tcount) is higher than tt (ttable), t0 > tt. It means that there is a significant
difference between vocabulary mastery of students through scattergories game for
pre-test and post-test. So, it can be concluded that the use of scattergories game is
effective in improving the students’ vocabulary at the eighth grade at SMPN 1
Masamba.
