This research discusses the techniques used by English teachers in teaching
reading to students at SMP Negeri 8 Palopo. The purpose of this research was to
determine the teacher's technique in teaching reading to class eight students at SMP
Negeri 8 Palopo. This type of research is called descriptive qualitative. The subject
of this research is the teacher. The research location is SMP Negeri 8 Palopo. The
instrument of this research is interview consited of eight questions to the teacher.
The data collection procedure in this research used observation, interviews, and
documentation. Data analysis techniques in this research used data reduction, data
display, and drawing conclusions. The results of this research show that the English
teacher in teaching reading students at SMP Negeri 8 Palopo has almost the same
technique for listening and repeating, summarizing techniques, group work
techniques, pair communication, and games. With this technique, it is easier for
teachers to provide materials to students. The techniques used by teachers in
teaching reading are quite effective for students in the learning process at SMP
Negeri 8 Palopo, although each technique used by English teachers in teaching
students to read has advantages and disadvantages.
