Abstract
Hamim Ainun Refanti. (2024). Improving Students` Vocabulary Competence Through A Role Play As ‘The News Anchor’ Of The Eleventh Grade Students At SMAN 6 Palopo (supervised by Rizal A.M Sjachrun and Reski Yusrini Islamiah Yunus).
This study investigates the effectiveness of role-play as a teaching strategy to enhance vocabulary acquisition among students in class XI at SMA Negeri 6 Palopo. The research involved 25 students initially assessed through a pre-test to determine their vocabulary mastery. The results revealed that students struggled significantly with vocabulary, as reflected in the low pre-test scores, with a mean score of 61.2, categorised as "poor." To address this, the researcher implemented role-play activities during the teaching and learning process. After the intervention, a post-test was administered, and the results showed a substantial improvement in students' vocabulary scores, with the mean score rising to 83.3, classified as "excellent." The study found that 83.33% of students achieved an "excellent" classification in the post-test, a significant increase from the pre-test, where only 16.66% of students were in this category. The analysis further revealed that role- play improved students' vocabulary and reduced score variability, indicating a more consistent vocabulary mastery across the class. The findings suggest that role play is a highly effective method for vocabulary acquisition, providing students with an engaging and contextualised learning experience that enhances retention and comprehension. This study concludes that incorporating role-play into language instruction can significantly improve students' vocabulary skills and recommends its broader application in educational settings.
