This research aims to determine the types of code switching used by
teacher in teaching and why teacher apply code switching in teaching English.
This research was conducted using qualitative research on august 2022 at SMP
Negeri 3 Palopo, the data collected is through observation and interview with
teacher at the research side. From the data that the researcher got, it is known
phenomenon of code switching carried out by teacher in learning English there are
three type namely, (1) Tag switching means inserting utterances that function as
reinforcements to emphasize the intent of an utterance, this type is the type of
code switching that the teacher used the least which is eight utterances. (2) Inter
sentential switching means to transfer one language to another language with the
meaning contained remains the same, this type is quite often used by teacher in
teaching there are thirty four utterances. (3) Intra sentential switching means a
shift from one language to another in other words mixing languages in clauses or
sentences, this type that is very often used by teacher in teaching there are eighty
four utterances. The eighth grade English teacher of SMP Negeri 3 Palopo very
often used code switching when teaching English because students are confused if
it is not varied between English and Indonesian, therefore almost every teaching
used code switching and she realizes that because it is often done when teaching
the main purpose do code switching so that students understand what is being
conveyed and students also understand what they are going to do.
