The objective of this research is to find out the effectiveness of using picture series in teaching to improve students’ ability in using simple past tense. The population of this research are the all of the eleventh grade students at SMA Negeri 6 Palopo in academic year . The researcher used simple random sampling with 30 students as the samples. The researcher used pre-experimental method with pre-test and post-test and written test as the instrument of the research. Then the researcher used SPPS to analyze the collecting data. The result of analyzing data shows that the mean score of students’ pre-test is 44,83 and on students’ post- test the mean score is 76.83 which indicates an improvement in students’ ability in using simple past tense. It is also supported by the result of t-test where sig. (2- tailed) value is 0.000 which is lower than α (0,05). The research also found that picture series can attract students’ attention and gain more focus of the students in learning. The using of picture series can creates fun atmoshphere in the class and help the students to understand the function of simple past tense. The using of picture series in teaching simple past tense also makes the students easier to write simple past tense sentences.It can be concluded that teaching by using picture series is effective in improving students’ ability in using simple past tense.
