This study aimed to determine the correlation between high-achieving peers
and students' motivation to learn English at Cokroaminoto Palopo University.
This study employed a correlational research design using a mixed-methods
approach. The participants were 30 students selected through purposive
sampling. Quantitative data were collected using questionnaires and analyzed
using simple linear regression with SPSS version 23, while qualitative data
were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using data
reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The quantitative findings
revealed that high-achieving peers did not have a significant correlation
between on students' motivation to learn English, with a significance value of
0.761 (> 0.05) and an R Square value of 0.003, indicating that high-achieving
peers explained only 0.3% of the variation in students' learning motivation. The
qualitative findings supported the quantitative results, showing that most
participants perceived high-achieving peers as positive role models and a
source of inspiration. However, students' motivation to learn English was
primarily influenced by personal goals, self-improvement, and the desire to
improve their English proficiency rather than by the presence of high-achieving
peers. Therefore, it can be concluded that high-achieving peers may provide
positive examples and inspiration but do not have a significant correlation
between on students' motivation to learn English at Cokroaminoto Palopo
University.
