Wiwin. 2026. The Effectiveness of Using English Songs to Improve the Second
Semester Students‘ Listening Skill at the English Department of Cokroaminoto
Palopo University (supervised by Paldy and Suhardi).
This research aims to find out the effectiveness of using English songs in
improving students‘ listening skills. The researcher used a pre-experimental
quantitative method. The population was the second-semester students of the
English Department at Cokroaminoto Palopo University consisting of 23 students,
taken using saturated sampling. The instrument was a listening test (pre-test and
post-test) consisting of 30 multiple-choice items. The data were analyzed using
SPSS 27 and the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test. The results showed that the pre-test
mean score was 86.38 and the post-test mean score increased to 88.12. However,
the Wilcoxon test yielded a significance value of
( ), meaning
the improvement was not statistically significant due to a ceiling effect and high
baseline scores. Nonetheless, descriptive analysis showed that 60.8% of students
improved their individual scores. Thus, English songs are effective as an engaging
media to support students' learning motivation and listening engagement.
