Technology to Improve Students’ Vocabulary Mastery at SMAN 5 Palopo

This research aims to find out (1) whether Artificial Intelligence (AI) is
effective or not in improving students’ vocabulary mastery at SMAN 5 Palopo
and (2) students’ perceptions of English language learning using Artificial
Intelligence (AI) at SMAN 5 Palopo. The population for this study consisted of
217 10th-grade students at SMAN 5 Palopo. By using Single-stage Cluster
Random sampling, a sample of 55 students was selected. The study used a Pre
Experimental design. Data were analyzed using a Mixed-methods approach with a
Convergent Parallel design. Students' mean scores increased from 47.491 on the
pretest to 67.527 on the posttest. Futhermore, the result of the T-test shows that
sig. (2-tailed) value < α (0.000 < 0.05). Thus, H0 is rejected and H1 is accepted,
meaning there is a significant effect of using ChatGPT, as an AI learning
technology, in improving students' vocabulary mastery. Therefore, it can be
concluded that ChatGPT is effective in improving the vocabulary mastery of most
10th-grade students at SMAN 5 Palopo. Additionally, the interview results from
the PU’s aspect indicate that students perceived AI (ChatGPT) can improve their
performance and productivity in English language learning. Meanwhile, from the
PEOU aspect, students perceived AI (ChatGPT) is easy to learn and operate in
English language learning. Therefore, it can be concluded that the 10th-grade
students at SMAN 5 Palopo perceive ChatGPT as a useful learning technology
that can be effectively used in English language learning.
