Abstract

Hartiwi Salenda. 2020. An Analysis of Student‟s Interpretation of Disney Song Lyrics at the Seventh Semester of English Language Education at Cokroaminoto Palopo Univeristy (supervised by Sri Damayanti S.,S.S, M.Hum and Resky Yusrini Islamiah Yunus S.Pd.,M.Pd. This research critically investigated (1) to what extent the Disney song lyrics comprehended by the undergraduate students, (2) how the undergraduate students of the seventh semester of Cokroaminoto Palopo University construct and make meaning of popular contemporary music from Disney song lyrics. The method applied was the mixed method since the data was analyzed by quantitative research and described by qualitative research method. The questionnaires were distributed through Google Form to 10 respondents. Data had been analyzed by applying Systemic Functional Grammar to see the most related level and process in student‟s writing in order to reveal the dominant process and the most preference level used by the students . The result of data analysis the researcher have found, the undergraduate students of Cokroaminoto Palopo University had multiform interpretation for the song lyrics. The inferential level of comprehension was preference in this research for the first song lyrics where there were 8 students used the level, followed by evaluative level of comprehension (2 students). For the second song lyrics, the inferential level was also the top (6 students) and there were 4 students the in the evaluative level of comprehension. From the total result, the researcher concluded that the students created their own perceptions and represented the message of the songs through their writing which had evoked their general understanding of the context in the song lyrics.
